Undercurrents: April 2025
SeaGen's roundup of company news and perspective on all things climate.
Blythe Taylor, Chief of Staff
This April has seen the 55th anniversary of Earth day. This year’s theme is Our Power, Our Planet, and emphasises the need for a global shift to renewable energy solutions. We’re living in a time of huge technological change, and at SeaGen we recognise the role technology and automation will need to play in harnessing the potential of Earth’s natural resources. Whether that’s solar, wind, or water, renewable power is fundamental to a sustainable future. Power is a core focus of development for us and our tech. Finding the right power solution and understanding how to maximise power efficiency with our robotics is crucial.
Solar is our first focus and we’ve been learning a huge amount about how to optimise our systems during this month’s ‘Buoys on Tour’. So far we’ve deployed our solar powered Baseline monitoring buoys at the National Marine Aquarium, Plymouth Sound, Brixham Harbour and Ealing’s Paradise Fields.
Our Baseline Buoy has a multitude of use cases across both marine and freshwater environments. Our cameras, hydrophone and environmental sensors stream data into our Baseline app, providing users with access to real-time data. The response from our project partners has been amazing. For Martyn Sherratt of MDL Marinas the versatility of the buoy is key. “The SeaGen Baseline Buoy is a really great piece of kit that has a plethora of applications for MDL Marinas. Not only can we monitor water quality and biodiversity in our marinas and receive real time alerts on invasive species, but we can also monitor marine traffic and our infrastructure 24/7.”
And for smaller projects the impact can be just as great. Elliot Newton is the Co-Founder of Citizen Zoo and project lead for The Ealing Beaver Project. “For us, doing more with less is paramount. As our beaver population grows and establishes itself, so does the impact of our work and the essential need to show the world the real evidence of what can be achieved by restoration projects working on limited budgets. Baseline Buoy is going to help us do just that.”

We’re really excited to be part of Asahi Group Holdings sustainability innovation programme. This is a new initiative which sees Asahi partner with nine start-ups to test, learn, and explore scaling sustainability solutions together.
SeaGen are working on two parallel R&D strands which will further the development of our seaweed cultivation system and understand the potential role of Asahi CO2 Absorbent in the sporing and cultivation.
